Appstem – Josette Desulme Profile

From a very early age, Josette Desulme knew art was her calling. Growing up, one of her cousins was an artist and inspired her to learn about art and graphic design, she’d watch her cousin draw or create graphics and that passion stuck with her, knowing art would always be a part of her life.

“I always knew I’d be a designer,” Josette said. “I never wanted to be anything else.”

That early exposure to design art started her off on a path towards a career in the field, starting with school fairs and catering her college studies with a clear vision in mind. Josette earned a B.A. in graphic design and a B.S. in digital arts before taking on an internship in fashion and graphic design, where she continued to build her skills as a product designer.

California was calling and Josette moved to San Francisco in 2017. She continued her education getting a master’s degree in web and new media from the Academy of Art, which led to freelance work in a variety of industries giving her more exposure to web design and branding. Earlier this year, she started working at Wag Labs as a visual designer, giving her the opportunity to develop the company’s new website and new branding.

“San Francisco owns the visual design space,” she said. “There is a lot of opportunity to find your own path so you can create the design career you want to have - not to mention the amazing food, people and atmosphere of the city.”

She had heard a lot about Appstem and the work they are doing in Bay Area tech circles and was excited for the opportunity to join their team as visual designer. After an unusual start in the middle of a global pandemic, which meant onboarding remotely and spending a lot of time on Zoom, Josette is off and running on an overhaul of the company’s website. She brings her visual design and UI/UX design skills to the project starting with the development of a mood board and wireframes to helping craft a whole new brand identity. The project should be complete by the end of the month.

“We’re very excited to have Josette as part of the Appstem team. She has a very impressive background that will add a lot to our design team”, Robert Armstrong, Appstem CEO.

Josette’s love of art hasn’t faded now that she’s been a full-time designer for a while. She still has a passion for photography. Before coronavirus, she’d be a regular at drag shows, Comic-Con and other cosplay events taking pictures. She also mentors UC Berkeley Springboard students in UI/UX design, passing on her enthusiasm and expertise to the next generation of designers and artists.

Appstem is always looking for talented developers and designers. Visit our website for opportunities on our team.
