Appstems is proud to announce, “Transition” – an app that’s making a difference for military personnel getting back to civilian life

Every year, more than 200,000 people transition back to civilian life after ending their military careers. We’re excited to share details about Military.com’s “Transition”- an app that’s helping dedicated military workers to successfully navigate a course back to civilian life.

Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their spouses all face a challenging transition period as they re-enter public life, often with unforeseen hurdles. For example, finding a job can be unexpectedly tricky especially for those aged 20-24 where employment rates are as high as 14.9%.

To meet the huge volume and many varied needs of transitioning personel, Military.com decided to create an app. As the nation’s largest military and veteran online news and membership organization, Military.com wanted to build a highly successful and scalable app right out of the gate. They turned to Apptem to build a world-class product capable of serving a very broad, global user-base, including reservists, guard members, retirees, veterans, family members, and defense workers. Appstem helped create the iOS and Android development for the app which is sponsored by Citi, and aims to make it easier for all military personnel as they move on to the next phase of their lives. Successful in targeting many diverse needs, the app was downloaded more than 5,500 times in its first 6-months.

“In just six months, our military members have embraced this technology and relied on it to guide them through their transition to civilian life,” said Greg Smith, President of Military.com and retired Navy admiral. “My hope is that even more service members will take advantage of this free resource.”

Military.com choose Appstem due to its experience with high stakes projects delivered quickly and flawlessly. The app continues to be adapted over time ensuring it will keep up-to-date in serving the needs of thousands of veterans who rely on it to provide a vital resources for career transitions and growth.

Obviously, the app needed a large degree of customization to meet the many different types of challenges across all different military personnel. The app includes veteran job resources which allows the user to search a robust database of jobs and upcoming job fairs. Building the job boards within the app required specialized database skills; something Appstem was able to turn around quickly. Additional functionality was built to enable customized tools for resource and timeline planning to best support transitioning professionals.

Planning ahead is critical for any successful transition. The app accommodates this by enabling users to receive notifications of upcoming tasks and important military paperwork as far as 18 months before separation. In this way, people can start immersing themselves in a new mindset and get a feel for the new environment ahead of time.

Available for free, the app can be downloaded at  Google Play and the Apple App Store.
