Microsoft’s Hololense? Get Your Holographic Apps Ready

The big news out of Redmond this week is that there’s big news out of Redmond. Hey how about that? It’s been too long, Redmond.

Of course the story that is sweeping across the tech world is the freshly announced Microsoft Hololense. A cross between the virtual reality of Oculus Rift, and the augmented reality of Google Glass, the Hololense is an attempt to overlay the real world with more holograms than you can shake a hologram interface device at.

Wired wrote a nice hands-on article about the Hololense, and it sounds like a this could very well represent an entirely new way to interface with our tech. The goal is to eventually drop the keyboard and rely on voice command and gestures, otherwise known as Star Trek and Minority Report computing, respectively.

Of course, an interface like this is only as good as its apps. We all remember Microsoft’s Kinect, which turned out to be a huge disappointment thanks to a, shall we say, poor selection in software. I’m afraid this is the moment when I have to remind you of Kinect Star Wars.

Sorry to bring that up but Microsoft is trying to redeem itself. On Hololense it has already collaborated with NASA to use data from the Mars rovers, allowing users to step onto the surface of Mars and make flailing arm movements to annotate what you see, according to the MIT Technology Review. Pretty Neat.

We’ve already seen some amazing augmented reality experiences on our phones. Now imagine working on, say, a motorcycle, and seeing a complete mechanical overlay that teaches you how to change the oil. Holographic oil changes? Yes please!

In addition to Microsoft’s Hololense, you also have Facebook, Google, and Samsung all competing for your eyeballs with virtual augmented reality type experiences of their own. In our minds, the winner is going to be the one that features, you guessed it, a suite of killer apps.
