Who is Thomas Anderson
The Japanese have a saying that roughly translates to you should do something completely different with your life every seven years or so. The word ikigai doesn’t have an exact English translation but roughly means “the reason for which you get up in the morning.” The concept does not have to be an end-goal but instead the way you live your everyday life – somewhere between what you love, what you care about, what the world needs and what you can get paid to do.
Though Thomas Anderson doesn’t follow this literally, he did change his career path to technology after spending many years focused on music. Thomas earned a few degrees in music at the university level and then switched to computer science, which eventually led to him joining Appstem almost two years ago.
“My experience in music, especially the work ethic of daily practice and constant improvement, provided the foundation for my success as a software engineer,” Anderson said.
As a senior software engineer at Appstem, he focuses on iOS apps from starting from scratch to coding to maintenance. He’s also providing technical advice to clients and dabbling in research and development for emerging technologies. Currently, he’s able to combine his passion for music with his need for intellectual exercise while working on a music app. This variety is one of the reasons he was drawn to Appstem.
“Appstem has a variety of clients all with different needs,” he said. “I get to use the whole gamut of my skillset and can be efficient with tight timelines.”
Although he is serious about his work, Anderson does find ways to unwind. He enjoys leading Chinese tea ceremonies for friends and training the next generation of ping pong superstars at his local club. He’s a bit of an ailurophile and enjoys taking pictures of cats while watching the sunset over the ocean. Anderson also enjoys time with his Appstem colleagues – both in and out of the office.
