Flour Bakery

The first app built on Toast’s public API.

When Flour’s ordering app was about to lose its platform, a template replacement wasn’t good enough. We designed and built a custom app for iOS and Android — and we’ve kept improving it every month since.

The brief

Flour Bakery is known for James Beard Award-winning baking and warm, neighborhood hospitality. Its mobile app ran on LevelUp — and LevelUp was shutting down.

Flour needed a new app, and it needed one fast.

What we saw

The fast answer was a white-label ordering app. Plenty exist, and most look the same. For a brand built on care in every detail, that was the problem: it had to feel like Flour, not a template with a new logo.

The harder question was how to connect it. Flour runs on Toast in every café, and Toast was opening its public API for the first time. Building on it meant the app could talk directly to the system handling orders in-store — and going first, before anyone had tested the path.

We chose to go first.

Account and security settings

A React Native app for iOS and Android, with Node.js middleware connecting it to Toast for menus and orders, and to Paytronix for loyalty.

Being first meant working alongside Toast’s team — testing endpoints as they were released, reporting what worked and flagging the gaps between what the API offered and what a real ordering app needs.
